Artisanally made from shade-grown, first flush tencha tea leaves of the Okumidori, Kanayamidori, Sayamakaori, Samidori, and Yabukita cultivars that are harvested on partner farms in the Uji and Kagoshima regions of Japan, this ceremonial-grade matcha is hand selected for the highest quality.
Authentic first flush ceremonial matcha is made from ground tencha tea leaves that are hand-plucked during Japan's first harvest. These young leaves are the highest quality, most nutrient-dense leaves, and typically contain 3 times more of the naturally-occurring L-theanine than subsequent harvests.
Once harvested, the tencha leaves are steamed, de-veined, de-stemmed, dried, and slowly stone ground into a powder to preserve the tea's delicate yet complex taste. These artisanal growing, harvesting, and grinding methods all ensure you are getting the highest quality of authentic Japanese ceremonial matcha.
This matcha powder delivers a vibrant green color, a smooth, creamy mouthfeel, and a balanced, well-rounded flavor, with vegetal, earthy notes from the Uji region and a refreshing, light sweetness from the Kagoshima region. Because of its higher levels of L-theanine, which is naturally sweet, this ceremonial matcha tea has a sweeter taste than culinary-grade matcha and is perfect for sipping.

Preheat a chawan (matcha bowl) by pouring hot water into it. Discard the water once the bowl is warmed. Use a stainless steel tea sifter to sift the matcha powder into the chawan. Pour 2 oz. hot water over sifted matcha powder. Use a chasen (bamboo whisk) to vigorously whisk your matcha using "M" shaped motions for 15 seconds. Add 4-6 fl. oz. of hot water. Continue whisking for an additional 30 seconds until frothy, then serve in the chawan.
